Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian appassionato.
Etymology: < Italian appassionato (1802 or earlier), use as adverb of appassionato appassionate adj.The term is used from the 19th cent. as a musical direction, by composers including Schubert and Beethoven. It is recorded in J. C. Koch Musikalisches Lexikon (1802). In form appassionata, after Italian appassionata, feminine of appassionato.
