Etymology: < scientific Latin Gigantopithecus, genus name (G. H. R. von Koenigswald 1935, in Proc. Sect. Sci. K. Nederl. Akad. Wetensch. 38 874) < ancient Greek γιγαντο- , combining form of γιγαντ- , γίγας giant (see giant n. and adj.) + scientific Latin -pithecus (fossil) ape (see Pliopithecus n.).

Palaeontology.

Any of several extinct giant apes of the genus Gigantopithecus, known from fossil remains found in East and South Asia, and dated to between 9 million and possibly as recently as 100,000 years ago; the genus itself.First identified from ‘dragon's teeth’ from Chinese apothecaries, Gigantopithecus was for a time thought to be an ancestral hominid.
