Etymology: < Greek γνῶσις investigation, knowledge (in Christian writers esp. a higher knowledge of spiritual things), < γνω- root of γιγνώσκειν know v.
A special knowledge of spiritual mysteries. Often with reference to the claim to such knowledge made by the Gnostics: Gnostic philosophy, Gnosticism.
