Etymology: irregularly < Greek γιγνώσκειν to know + -op- (in opium n.) + -ine suffix5.
Chemistry.
Either of two isomeric alkaloids, C22H23NO7, designated α- and β-gnoscopine, of which α-gnoscopine is found in opium and β-gnoscopine obtained synthetically.

1878 T. Smith & H. Smith in Pharm. Jrnl. & Trans. 9 82/1 In the mother liquors from the purification of narceine we have now repeatedly met with a crystalline body, which..was..ascertained to be a hitherto unknown alkaloid, and which we have named Gnoscopine.
1914 E. Hope & R. Robinson in Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 105 ii. 2087 It is proposed to call the substance melting at 180° β-gnoscopine, reserving the name α-gnoscopine for the compound previously known as gnoscopine or r-narcotine, which melts at 229°.
1951 A. Grollman Pharmacol. & Therapeutics iv. 88 The remaining [opium] alkaloids (laudanosine,..codamine, gnoscopine, etc.) occur in too small quantity to have any influence on the action of the crude drug.
1954 J. Stanek & R. H. F. Manske in R. H. F. Manske & H. L. Holmes Alkaloids IV. xxxii. 181 Both of the gnoscopines were convertible into narceine, indicating that the only differences were stereochemical ones, and β-gnoscopine was partly isomerized to α-gnoscopine.
