Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the second syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. gibboso-lobate Brit. /ɡɪˌbəʊsə(ʊ)ˈləʊbeɪt/, U.S. /dʒəˌboʊsoʊˈloʊˌbeɪt/, /ɡəˌboʊsoʊˈloʊˌbeɪt/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin gibboso-.
Etymology: < scientific Latin gibboso- (in e.g. gibboso-lobatus : see note) < post-classical Latin gibbosus gibbose adj. + -o- -o- connective.With gibboso-lobate (see quot. 18461) compare scientific Latin gibboso-lobatus (1816 or earlier).
