Etymology: Either < Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French engendrure engendrure n., with loss of the initial syllable (compare later engendrure n.), or perhaps < Old French (Picardy) gendreure (c1165), although this is only attested in sense ‘birth’ (compare Anglo-Norman gendrure progeny, offspring (second half of the 12th cent.); < gendrer gender v.¹ + -ure -ure suffix¹). Compare post-classical Latin generatura (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian). Compare gendering n.¹, generation n.
