Etymology: < scientific Latin Geometra, genus name ( Linnaeus Systema naturae (ed. 10, 1758) 495, originally as a subdivision of the genus Phalaena), specific use of classical Latin geōmetra (see geometer n.) + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Geometridae, family name ( J. F. Stephens Systematic Catal. Brit. Insects (1829) ii. 14), alteration of Geometrida ( W. E. Leach in Edinb. Encycl. (1815) IX. 134/2).

A moth of the large family Geometridae, typically having cryptically patterned wings held out flat when at rest, with caterpillars that often mimic small twigs in appearance and move by alternately hunching and stretching the body (cf. geometer n. 4).
