Etymology: < glove n. + work n.
1. Boxing. Work done with the fists and gloves when boxing; skilful punching or sparring. Now also: those elements of boxing training which require the wearing of gloves.Gloves were used in boxing from the late 18th cent., chiefly for training; prior to the introduction of the Marquess of Queensbury Rules in 1867, most prizefights were fought without gloves.
