Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: ghost n., -less suffix.
Etymology: < ghost n. + -less suffix. With sense 1 compare Middle Low German geistlōs , gēstlōs without spirit, secular, Middle High German geistelōs without spirit (German geistlos ; now usually in sense ‘without wit or intelligence’); in the early modern period (during the Reformation) both were also used specifically with reference to a perceived lack of religious spirituality, especially in the clergy and rites of the Roman Catholic Church (16th cent.; compare quot. a1603).
1. Having no soul, spirit, or animating principle; dead, inert. Often in extended use (esp. in the 17th cent.), typically designating something viewed as lacking spirituality or merely secular.With quot. 2014 cf. ghost in the machine at ghost n. and adj. Phrases 2f.
