Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: geo- comb. form, -geny comb. form.
Etymology: < geo- comb. form + -geny comb. form, perhaps after French géogénie (1782 or earlier) or its etymon German Geogenie (1780 in the title of a book by J. E. Silberschlag). Compare earlier geogony n.
The origin or formation of the earth; spec. the geological history of the earth; (formerly also) †a branch of geology dealing with this (obsolete). Cf. geogony n.
