Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Geoffroy.
Etymology: < the name of Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772–1844) and his son Isidore (1805–61), both French zoologists. Compare scientific Latin geoffroyi , specific name, first used in the genus Nycteris (C. Desmarest in Encyclopédie méthodique (1820) I. 127). With sense 3 compare scientific Latin Felis geoffroyi (A. d'Orbigny & P. Gervais 1844, in Extr. Proc.-verb. Soc. Philomathique Paris 40).

Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire in 1806. Other species include (in quot. 1829) Nycteris thebaica, (in quot. 19041) Anoura geoffroyi, and (in quot. 19042) Sturnira lilium.
