Origin: A borrowing from Lushootseed. Etymon: Lushootseed gwídəq.
Etymology: < Lushootseed (Puget Salish) gwídəq < a first element of uncertain origin + əq genitals, apparently on account of the shape of the mollusc. The forms with geo- (α. forms) probably originated as editorial alterations of forms in goe- (although these are first attested slightly later; compare β. forms), perhaps influenced by geo- comb. form. The pronunciation (dʒī·odɒk) /ˈdʒiːəʊdʌk/ recorded by N.E.D. (1898) is not now usual and was probably a spelling pronunciation based on the α. forms. The earliest and most common form of the second part of the word has been explained as an assimilation to duck n.1 (with allusion to the alleged resemblance of the mollusc's extended siphon to the neck of a (dead) duck; for a similar semantic association compare barnacle n.2 2):1881 H. Hemphill Let. in Bull. U.S. Fish Comm. 1 21 When first dug and laid upon its back, it resembles a fat plump duck. Quot. 1881 mentions a synonymous quenux used by the ‘Indians on the Sound’; this reflects the etymon in a regional variety of Lushootseed + the English plural ending -s.
Chiefly North American.
A very large edible bivalve mollusc, Panopea generosa (family Hiatellidae), of the Pacific coast of North America, which burrows deep in sandy mud and has shell valves which do not wholly cover the body or the very long siphon. Also: (New Zealand) a similar mollusc of the same genus found off New Zealand coasts, esp. P. zelandica. Also geoduck clam.
