Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: geo- comb. form, barometer n.
Etymology: < geo- comb. form + barometer n. In sense 1 after German Geobarometer (F. W. Pfaff 1890, in Zeitschr. der Deutschen Geol. Gesellsch. 42 303, who attributed the term to his father). With sense 2 compare geothermometer n. 2.
Geology.
1. An apparatus for measuring pressure within the earth. rare (now disused).

2. A mineral or mineral assemblage whose chemical composition or stability range is sensitive to pressure, so it may be used as a guide to the pressure under which the rock containing it was formed.

2005 M. Bjornerud Reading Rocks ii. 46 A mineral like diamond, whose formation depends mainly on pressure, is a good geobarometer, providing a measure of the rock's depth at the time that the mineral was formed.
