单词 armilla
释义

armillan.

Brit. /ɑːˈmɪlə/, U.S. /ɑrˈmɪlə/
Inflections: Plural armillae, armillas.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin armilla.
Etymology: < classical Latin armilla armband, bracelet, metal hoop, ring, washer, socket, in post-classical Latin also stole (worn in a coronation: 12th cent. in a British source), armillary sphere (13th cent. in a British source) < armus shoulder (see arm n.1) + -illa -illa suffix. Compare earlier armil n. and the foreign-language forms cited at that entry. The motivation for the application of the Latin word to the Stole Royal in the British coronation is uncertain; it is perhaps based simply on the resemblance of a stole made of a cloth of gold to a gold armil, with this association perhaps reinforced by the two items being placed upon the sovereign at a similar point in the coronation ceremony, and perhaps also with reference to the stole encircling the neck and shoulders of the sovereign in the manner of a ring.
