Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French armille; Latin armilla.
Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman and Middle French armille (French armille ) arm-ring, bracelet (late 12th cent. in Old French; in Anglo-Norman also end of the 14th cent. or earlier with specific reference to a bracelet worn by the English sovereign at his or her coronation), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin armilla armilla n. With use in sense 3 compare earlier armilla n. 1, and also French armilles (plural noun), in same sense (a1324 in Old French as armiles; rare before the first half of the 19th cent.).
1. An arm-ring or bracelet; (now spec.) a golden bracelet worn by the British sovereign at his or her coronation.In its specific application to a bracelet worn at the coronation, frequently confused with sense 2. In many instances it is impossible to establish which sense is meant.
