ghost estate n. chiefly Irish English a housing estate which has been largely abandoned; (now) esp. a newly-built estate in which most of the units are uninhabited or unfinished.In early use probably not a fixed collocation.In later use, in the Republic of Ireland, ghost estates are associated chiefly with the economic recession of 2008 that followed the ‘Celtic Tiger’ period of rapid growth in the 1990s and early 2000s, when a surplus of housing was built.
