Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin armifer , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin armifer bearing arms, warlike ( < armi- , combining form of arma arms (see arms n.) + -fer -fer comb. form) + -ous suffix; compare -ferous comb. form.
Now rare.
Bearing weapons or armour; warlike, bellicose. Also: bearing, or entitled to bear, heraldic arms. Cf. armigerous adj.
