Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin armeria, armerius.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin armeria any of various plants of the genus Dianthus (1512 or earlier; also armerius (1536 or earlier), both apparently earliest in French sources), apparently < Middle French armerie (15th cent.; also armoirie (1541), armorie (1544); French †armoirie, †armerie), of unknown origin.In sense 2 after scientific Latin use as genus name ( C. L. Willdenow Enumeratio plantarum hortii regii botanici Berolinensis (1809) I. 333; compare the earlier binomial Statice Armeria ( Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) 274)). Some pre-Linnaean authors placed thrift with the pinks in the genus Caryophyllus.
Botany.
1. Any of various flowering herbaceous plants of the genus Dianthus (family Caryophyllaceae), including Deptford pink, D. armeria, and sweet william, D. barbatus. Obsolete.

A genus of perennial, tufted, flowering herbs of the family Plumbaginaceae, which are native to (esp. alpine and coastal) areas in Europe, Asia, America, and North Africa, many being cultivated widely as ornamental plants; (also armeria) a plant of this genus, of which the most widespread is common thrift, Armeria maritima.

1995 Midwest Living Apr. 54/4 Sea thrift (Armeria) resembles little tufts of grass until the rose or white globe-shaped flowers appear in late spring or early summer.
