Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German armenoid.
Etymology: < German armenoid (F. von Luschan 1884, in Archiv f. Anthropologie (Correspondenz-Blatt) Nov. 167/2; 1892 or earlier as noun) < Armen- (in e.g. armenisch Armenian n. and adj.) + -oid -oid suffix.
Physical Anthropology. Now chiefly historical.
Of, relating to, or designating a division of the Caucasoid race associated with the northern part of Western Asia, including Anatolia, the Caucasus, and the eastern Mediterranean, characterized by a brachycephalic skull shape, a prominent nose, and dark skin and hair. Also as n.: a person of this physical type.
