Etymology: < Gethsemane (also Gethsemani), the name of a ‘garden’ or enclosure on the Mount of Olives, the scene of the agony of Jesus before his arrest (Matthew 26:36, Mark 14:32) < post-classical Latin Gethsemani (Vulgate) and its etymon Hellenistic Greek Γεθσημανί (New Testament; in Byzantine Greek also Γεθσημανῆ), apparently < an unattested Aramaic borrowing of an unattested Hebrew compound meaning ‘oil press’ < biblical Hebrew gaṯ wine press + šĕmānīm, plural of šemen oil, fat (cognate with Aramaic šuman, in same senses).The name of the biblical garden is attested in English contexts from the Old English period onwards (in Old English as Gezemani, Gezamani, in Middle English as Gethsemani, Gethsemany).
