Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: gadolinium n.
Etymology: Symbolic abbreviation for gadolinium n. First used in a French context (P.-É. Lecoq de Boisbaudran & M. Marignac 1886, in Compt. Rend. 102 902).
Chemistry.

1886 Nature 29 Apr. 623/1 At the author's [sc. M. Lecoq de Boisbaudran] suggestion, M. Marignac, discoverer of this rare earth, has at last definitely named it gadolinium (symbol Gd).
1922 T. M. Lowry Inorg. Chem. xxxiv. 673 Gadolinium forms a colourless oxide, Gd2O3, and colourless tervalent salts which show absorption bands only in the ultra-violet.
1978 H. M. Rosenberg Solid State (ed. 2) ix. 204 Gd is ferromagnetic, but the heavier rare earth metals from Tb to Tm show complex behaviour.
