Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French germon.

Etymology: < French germon (1690 in the passage translated in quot. 1698), of uncertain origin. Perhaps related to Anglo-Norman gernon tench (c1290 or earlier; probably a specific use of gernon , grenon moustache, whisker (see granons n.), so called on account of its barbels), or perhaps related to French (regional) germon , gernon shoot of a plant (1365 in Middle French; < germe germ n. + -on -oon suffix), although if so the semantic connection is unclear.

Now rare.

A tuna; esp. the albacore, Thunnus alalunga.
