Etymology: < French gentisin (C. Leconte 1837, in Jrnl. de pharm. 23 469) < Gentis (classical Latin Gentius ), the name of the king of Illyria, after whom the plant gentian is said to have been named (see gentian n.) + French -in -in suffix¹.In the specific use perhaps after German Gentisin (1875 or earlier).

Any of several compounds originally isolated from gentian root; spec. a plant pigment of the xanthone class, responsible for the yellow colour of gentian root.Chemical name: 1,7-dihydroxy-3-methoxyxanthone; C₁₄H₁₀O₅.
