Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin gentīlītius , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin gentīlītius, also gentīlīcius of or proper to a particular Roman gens, tribal, national, in post-classical Latin also pagan (4th cent.; < gentīlis gentile adj. + -ītius : see -itious suffix1) + -ous suffix. Compare slightly earlier gentilitial adj. and later gentilitian adj.
1. Characteristic of or relating to those who do not subscribe to the dominant religion of a particular society; spec. heathen, non-Christian. Obsolete.
