释义

genistan.

Brit. /dʒᵻˈnɪstə/, U.S. /dʒəˈnɪstə/
Forms:

α. Middle English–1500s geneste, Middle English–1600s 1800s genesta, 1500s– genista, 1600s genest.

β. Middle English genester, Middle English genestres, Middle English–1500s genestre.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French genest; Latin genista; French genestre.
Etymology: In α. forms < (i) Anglo-Norman genest (masculine), Anglo-Norman and Middle French geneste (feminine) any of various yellow-flowered shrubs, especially the common broom (12th cent. in Old French; Middle French genet , French genêt ), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin genista broom (also genesta; in scientific Latin also as genus name (1753 in Linnaeus: see note at definition)), of unknown origin. In β. forms < (iii) Anglo-Norman and Middle French genestre broom (13th cent. in Old French), apparently an alteration (after other words in -estre , e.g. fenestre window: see fenester n.) of geneste (see above). With the α. forms compare Old Occitan genesta , Catalan ginesta (c1372), Spanish hiniesta (1515; c1250 as †genesta ), and Dutch regional (Flanders) ginst , ginste (1599 in Kiliaan as ghenst ), Middle Low German gynst , Old High German geneste (German Ginst , now archaic). With the β. forms compare Spanish genestra (1515), Italian ginestra (a1353), post-classical Latin genestra (14th cent. in an Italian source), and also Middle Dutch, Dutch †ginster, Old High German genester (in a late manuscript; Middle High German ginster, ganster, genster, etc., German Ginster), probably all via one or more Romance languages.
Any of the yellow-flowered, often spiny shrubs constituting the genus Genista (family Fabaceae ( Leguminosæ)), native to Europe, western Asia, and North Africa; (in form Genista) the genus itself. In early use also: any of various related plants, esp. common broom, Cytisus scoparius.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species plantarum (1753) II. 709.
