Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin Genistae, plural (a636 in Isidore), and its etymon (ii) Hellenistic Greek Γενισταί, plural, apparently < γεν- (see -gen comb. form) + -ισταί , plural of -ιστής -ist suffix. Compare Middle French Geniste , French (now hist.) Géniste (1565 or earlier). Compare Genite n.According to Isidore ( Origines 8. 4. 7) the sect was so called because its members claimed direct descent from Abraham (quoniam de genere Abrahae sunt); however, this reflects a later rationalization, since the Greek name appears to have been formed after post-biblical Hebrew mīn schismatic, heretic, a specific sense development of biblical Hebrew mīn kind, genus. See D. Gershenson & G. Quispel ‘Meristae’, in Vigiliae Christianae (1958) 12 19–26.
