Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Latin genipapus; Portuguese jenipapo.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin genipapus (1605 in pomus genipapi (see note), or earlier), and its etymon (ii) Brazilian Portuguese jenipapo, †genipapo, denoting both the tree and the fruit (c1574) < Tupi yani'pawa , probably originally denoting the fruit. Compare Middle French genipat , denoting both the tree and the fruit (see genipat n.). Compare also post-classical Latin Ianipaba (1648 in Piso & Marcgrave). Compare earlier genipat n.In α. forms probably reflecting a Latin genitive singular; the source of quot. 1613 makes explicit reference to a Latin text of 1605 which uses succus pomi genipapi, lit. either ‘the juice of the fruit of the genipap’ or ‘the juice of the fruit [called] genipap’.
The edible fruit (a large, reddish-brown, oval berry) of the tropical American tree Genipa americana (family Rubiaceae), which contains a juice traditionally used as a skin dye by certain tribes of South American Indians; the tree itself, which has large obovate leaves and scented flowers.
