genipn.2

Brit. /ɡᵻˈnɪp/, /ˈɡɛnɪp/, U.S. /ɡəˈnɪp/, /ˈɡɛnɪp/, Caribbean English /ɡɪˈnɪp/, /ˈɡɛnɪp/
Forms:

α. 1700s genap, 1700s– genip, 1800s– ginep, 1800s– guinep Caribbean English /ɡɪˈnɛp/, 1900s– canep, 1900s– gunnap.

β. 1800s– kinep, 1900s– kenip, 1900s– kinip, 1900s– kinnup, 1900s– kinop.

Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Arawak. Perhaps also partly a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Arawak kenepa; Spanish quenepo; Spanish quenepa.
Etymology: Apparently ultimately < Arawak kenepa, denoting the fruit. Compare American Spanish quenepo, denoting the tree, and quenepa, denoting the fruit, which have been suggested as possible intermediaries, but are apparently not attested before the 20th cent. In form genip perhaps influenced by the unrelated genip n.1
Chiefly Caribbean (originally Jamaican).
Any of several trees of the tropical American genus Melicoccus and closely related genus Talisia (family Sapindaceae), which have compound leaves and clusters of small whitish flowers followed by round, greenish, edible fruits; esp. M. bijugatus of northern South America and the Caribbean (also called honeyberry). Also: the fruit of any of these trees. Frequently attributive.
