Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin genio-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin genio- (also geneo- ), formations in which are found from at least the early 17th cent. (e.g. geneoglossus genioglossus n.) < ancient Greek γένειον chin < γένυς jaw ( < the same Indo-European base as chin n.1) + -ειον , suffix forming nouns; compare -o- connective.Found in a small number of adaptations from Latin and French, earliest in the early 17th cent. in genioglossus n. Combining with second elements ultimately of Greek and Latin origin.
Chiefly Anatomy and Zoology.
Forming adjectives and nouns relating to the chin; spec. designating or denoting muscles which connect the chin with another structure or structures.
