Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Genin.
Etymology: < German Genin (H. Kiliani 1915, in Ber. Deut. Chem. Ges. 48 335), apparently < -gen -gen comb. form + -in -in suffix1. Compare earlier digitogenin n. at digito- comb. form , sapogenin n.
Biochemistry.
Any of numerous steroidal substances occurring as the aglycones of saponins and other natural glycosides of plant or animal origin.
