Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: geo- comb. form, -tropism comb. form.
Etymology: < geo- comb. form + -tropism comb. form, after German Geotropismus ( A. B. Frank Beiträge zur Pflanzenphysiol. (1868) ix. 85). Compare slightly later geotropic adj.
Chiefly Botany.
The directional growth of a plant or (less commonly) a sessile animal in response to gravity; (also) the directional movement of a motile animal in response to gravity (= geotaxis n.); an instance of any of these responses.C. and F. Darwin used the word in a narrower sense to mean positive geotropism, the term apogeotropism being used for negative geotropism.
