Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Georgium Sidus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Georgium Sidus, literally ‘the Georgian star’ (1782) < neuter of Georgius George (see St George n.) + classical Latin sīdus star (see sideral adj.); so named in honour of King George III (see quots. 1782, 1783).
Astronomy. Now historical.
Sir William Herschel's name for: the planet Uranus (see Uranus n.). Cf. Herschel n.Herschel’s suggestion of the name Georgium Sidus (‘the Georgian star’) for the planet he had discovered in 1781 met with opposition from many other astronomers; J. E. Bode’s proposal of Uranus, in conformity with other names from classical mythology, was ultimately accepted.In quot. 1812 figurative, referring to King George III.
