单词 gash-gabbit
释义

gash-gabbitadj.

Brit. /ˌɡaʃˈɡabɪt/, /ˈɡaʃˌɡabɪt/, U.S. /ˌɡæʃˈɡæbət/, /ˈɡæʃˌɡæbət/, Scottish English /ˌɡaʃˈɡabɪt/, /ˈɡaʃˌɡabɪt/
Forms: 1700s gash-gabbet, 1800s– gash-gabbit.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: an element of uncertain origin, English gabbit.
Etymology: < a first element of uncertain origin + gabbit ( < gab n.2 + -ed suffix2; compare also gab n.3). On the first element see further discussion at gash adj.2 and adv.1; it is uncertain whether Scots gash in slightly later use in the sense ‘projection of the under jaw’ shows (in spite of the chronology) the immediate etymon of this word, or instead a later development modelled on the adjective.Compare also the differently formed (and earlier attested) Scots gash-gabbit ( < gash adj.2 + gabbit, as above), in the meaning ‘loquacious’; some degree of mutual influence between the two words seems likely:1706 in Sc. Antiquary (1898) 12 99 Ye mannee look for sic well-buked Language, as the Gashgabbed Pamphlet-men set aff their Tales wee.
Scottish.
Having a protruding chin or lower jaw. Sc. National Dictionary (at Gash) records this word as still in use in Angus and Lanarkshire in 1954.
