Forms: 1600s–1700s gant(e)lop, 1600s gantloop, 1700s gauntlope, Scottish goadloup, 1600s– gant(e)lope.
Etymology: corruptly < Swedish gatlopp, Middle Swedish gatu-lop ( < gata lane, gate n.2 + lopp course). Old Norse had gǫtuþiófr, explained as a thief punished by running the ‘gantlope’. The Swedish word probably became known in England through the Thirty Years' War; the equivalent gassenlaufen is found in German.
Now rare except in the more corrupt form gauntlet n.2
A military (occasionally also naval) punishment in which the culprit had to run stripped to the waist between two rows of men who struck at him with a stick or a knotted cord. rare except in †to pass the gantlope, to run the gantlope.
