Etymology: Ultimately < the name of Cambodia (see Cambodian n.), probably via forms in post-classical Latin, although these are first attested considerably later than the English word (compare gamboidea (1688)); compare French Camboge, †Cambodge, the name of Cambodia (17th cent.; in 18th cent. also Gamboge), †gamboge gamboge (mid 18th cent.).Compare:1699 W.
