Etymology: < post-classical Latin gambetta (1610 in Aldrovandus), apparently reflecting a form in a Romance language: compare Italian regional gambetta , denoting the ruff or the lapwing ( < gamba leg (see jamb n.) + -etta -etta suffix).Adopted in scientific Latin as a specific name in Tringa gambetta (now Tringa totanus), the redshank ( Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (1758) X. 148), and as a genus name Gambetta ( K. L. Koch Die Säugthiere und Vögel Baiern (1816) 307) now subsumed within Tringa. N.E.D. (1898) gives the pronunciation as (gæmbe·tă) /ɡæmˈbɛtə/.
