Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Gamasus , -id suffix³.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Gamasus, genus name (Latreille, 1802), specific use of post-classical Latin gamasus agile (11th cent.) + -id suffix³, after scientific Latin Gamasidae, former family name (1834 or earlier), or (in later use) Gamasida, group name.Latreille had formerly named the genus Carpais ( Précis des caractères génériques des insectes (1796) 184), but changed the name to Gamasus as he considered Carpais too difficult (‘trop dur’).

Belonging to or characteristic of the acarine group Gamasida (in early use restricted to the former family Gamasidae), comprising mites that are typically free-living and predatory, and some that are parasitic or commensal.Economically important gamasid mites include the phytoseiid mites, which are used in the biological control of insect pests, and the bee mite, Varroa destructor.
