Etymology: < Middle French gamache (1591), by haplology < Spanish guadamecí kind of leather made in Ghadames (a1207; also †guadamecil , †guadamecin , etc.; compare Portuguese guadameci , also guadamecil (13th cent. as †godomeçil ), guadamecim (1651)) < Arabic ġadāmasī of or relating to Ghadames (compare jild ġadāmasī leather made in Ghadames) < Ġadāmas , the name of a town in Libya (English Ghadames ), where a highly esteemed kind of leather was made. Compare Old Occitan gamacha (1383 in an apparently isolated attestation; Occitan gamacha ), Italian gamascia (a1667), Dutch gamasche (1806; 17th cent. as †gamache ), German Gamasche (1615 as †Gammachen , plural noun; chiefly in plural), all < French. Compare later gamashin n., gramash n.The forms gamashoes, gammashoes show alteration by folk-etymological association with shoes, plural of shoe n.
