Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French gadolinite.
Etymology: < French gadolinite (1801) < German Gadolinit (M. H. Klaproth 1800, in a lecture at the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences) < the name of Johan Gadolin (1760–1852), Finnish mineralogist + German -it -ite suffix1.
Mineralogy.
A mineral which typically occurs as black prisms and consists of a silicate of yttrium, beryllium, and iron, usually also with cerium and other elements (esp. lanthanides).Formula: (Ce,La,Nd,Y)2FeBe2Si2O10. Crystal system: monoclinic. Two species in particular are distinguished, gadolinite-(Y) and gadolinite-(Ce), depending on whether yttrium or cerium predominates.
