Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a French lexical item, and partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: gadinic adj., -ine suffix5.
Etymology: < gadin- (in gadinic adj.) + -ine suffix5. In sense 1 after French gadinine (1876 or earlier in this sense). In sense 2 after German Gadinin ( L. Brieger Ueber Ptomaine (1885) ii. 49).
Chemistry.
1. A fatty substance found in cod liver oil; = gaduin n. Obsolete. rare.

1881 R. A. Witthaus Gen. Med. Chem. 283 Cod-liver oil contains..a peculiar fatty acid called gadinic acid, which solidifies at 60°, and a brown substance called gaduin or gadinine.
2. An alkaloid formed by the putrefaction of proteins. Now chiefly historical.Formula: C7H16NO2.
