Etymology: See appal v.: Doubtful whether (1) a later adoption of French appalir, (2) an assimilation of appal v. to pale adj., or (3) an independent new formation on pale adj., after appal v. had lost its literal sense, and evident connection with pale . The senses are, to a great extent, parallel to those of appal v.
Obsolete.
