单词 gachupin
释义

gachupinn.

Brit. /ˌɡatʃəˈpiːn/, U.S. /ˌɡætʃəˈpin/
Forms: 1800s– gachupin, 1800s– gachupine.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: French gachupine; Spanish gachupín.
Etymology: < (i) French gachupine (1811 in the passage translated in quot. 1811), and its etymon (ii) Mexican Spanish gachupín (mid 18th cent. or earlier), perhaps a variant of cachupín (1591), apparently < Castilian Spanish cachopo (a1449), term of abuse of uncertain sense and origin + ín -ine suffix4.Despite formal difficulties, it has sometimes been suggested that Spanish cachopo is related to cacho pot, pan (15th cent.), probably < an unattested post-classical Latin form *caccalus < classical Latin caccabus pot ( < ancient Greek κάκκαβος : see cockle n.5), with alteration of the ending; compare -ulus suffix. Compare also Nahuatl cachopīn (first half of the 18th cent.), which has been suggested as the origin of Spanish gachupín, but is more likely to be a borrowing from Spanish.
In Spanish America, esp. Mexico: a native of Spain or a person of Spanish descent. Cf. criollo n. 1.
