Etymology: < French gangue (1552 in Middle French) < German Gang vein, seam, lode (of metal), specific sense of Gang gang n. Compare gangart n.Some examples may perhaps reflect direct borrowing of German Gang.
Geology and Mining.
The unwanted or valueless part of a mineral deposit, surrounding or mixed with the ore; the matrix (matrix n. 3a) in which a mineral occurs. Cf. veinstone n. 1.
