Any of a class of sphingolipids that contain a chain of sugar residues including sialic acid, and which are widely distributed in body tissues, esp. as components of cell membranes, but are found in greatest concentration in the nervous system. Cf. cerebroside n. ΚΠ 1943 Ann. Rev. Biochem. 12 245 They [sc. cerebrosides of a new class] are found in the gray matter of normal brains and, according to Klenk, are constituents of the nerve cells.
