Etymology: < French fête champêtre (1695 or earlier) < fête fête n. + champêtre rural (11th cent. in Old French as champestre ) < classical Latin campestris of or relating to fields (see campestral adj.).In plural form fêtes champêtres after the French plural form.
An outdoor or pastoral entertainment, often of an elegant kind; a rural festival. Also: a genre of painting which focused on the depiction of these, popularized in 18th-century France; a painting in this genre (cf. fête galante n.).
