单词 fáinne
释义

fáinnen.

Brit. /ˈfɔːnjə/, U.S. /ˈfɔnjə/, /ˈfɑnjə/, Irish English /ˈfɒːnjə/
Forms: 1900s– fainne, 1900s– fáinne. Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Irish. Etymon: Irish fáinne.
Etymology: < Irish fáinne (Early Irish fáinne , alteration of áinne : see note), probably ultimately related to classical Latin ānus ring (see anus n.), although the nature of the relationship is unclear. Compare earlier fawney n.In Irish, in grammatical contexts that cause initial mutation (specifically lenition: see lenition n. 2), words beginning in a vowel are sometimes reanalysed as showing forms with initial fh- (which is silent), the lenited form of f-; this reanalysis then gives rise to a secondary initial f- in the unlenited forms (e.g. the nominative).
Irish English.
