单词 futz
释义

futzv.

Brit. /fʌts/, U.S. /fəts/, Australian English /fʌts/
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: fuck v.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps a euphemistic alteration of fuck v. (compare to fuck around 2 at fuck v. Phrasal verbs 1). Perhaps also compare English (slang) futz foolish or unpleasant person (1935 or earlier).Although a borrowing < Yiddish fartsen to break wind ( < Middle High German varzen fart v.; also as prefixed verb arumfartsen : see note) has been suggested, this poses formal as well as geographical problems (since diffusion of this word from Australia to North America would not be an expected route). Yiddish arumfartsen to mess about, to waste time, is < arum- , use as prefix of arum around, about ( < Middle High German her umb , her umbe : see rumspringa n.) + fartsen. Compare German (coarse slang) herumfurzen to mess about, to waste time (late 20th cent.).
colloquial (originally Australian, now chiefly North American).
intransitive. To occupy oneself in an ineffectual or trifling way; to mess about, to waste time; to fiddle or tinker with something. Chiefly with around.
