Brit. /ˈf(j)uːtɒn/, /fuːˈtɒn/, U.S. /ˈfuˌtɑn/

Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese futon.
Etymology: < Japanese futon kind of mattress or (now rarely) cushion, originally woven from or stuffed with reedmace, and typically used on the floor, e.g. as bedding (17th cent.; earlier in senses ‘round sitting mat used in zazen, zafu’ (13th cent.) and ‘floor cushion, zabuton’ (16th cent.)) < fu- reedmace (see zafu n.; now also written with the kanji for fu- cloth; also < Middle Chinese) + -ton round thing ( < Middle Chinese). The form futong reflects a Japanese syllabic nasal in the second syllable, usually represented in transliteration by -n (in word-final position).
1. A type of bed originating in Japan consisting of a padded, unsprung mattress and a quilted cover, typically laid out on the floor for sleeping and rolled up or folded for storage when not in use.Frequently used of either the mattress or the quilted cover in isolation.
