Etymology: < German Gamsigradit (A. Breithaupt 1861, in Berg- u. Hüttenmännische Zeitung 20 53/1) < Gamsigrad , variant form of Gamzigrad , the name of a town (now Gamzigradska Banja ) and archaeological site in Serbia where the mineral was discovered + -it -ite suffix¹, with remodelling of the ending after -ite suffix¹.

Mineralogy. Now rare or disused.

A velvet-black manganese-containing mineral (now regarded as a variety of hornblende).
