Etymology: Apparently originally a variant of fustian n. and adj., with either reduction or complete elision of the medial element of prep. (due to its unstressed position), and with various folk-etymological alterations. Compare slightly earlier Napes n., and perhaps also earlier nape n.²Most of the α. forms (with the probable exception of fustinaples) appear to reflect folk-etymological alteration after apples, plural of apple n. The β. and γ. forms appear to reflect association with jackanapes n. (compare forms, and see discussion, at that entry). The δ. forms and some of the α. forms may show substitution of in prep. (perhaps compare jackinapse at jackanapes n. ε. forms). The ε. forms arose from the γ. forms by folk-etymological reinterpretation of the medial an as and conj.¹
